What is insulin and why is it so important?

diabetes facts illustrationThis is a hormone that is necessary for the organism and its role is very important. It produces its cells in the pancreas and its main role is to start the transport of glucose into the bloodstream and to make its proper distribution to all the cells that use it as a source of energy.

This means that the pancreas produces exactly certain amounts of insulin so that all the sugar is used up and does not settle in the blood vessels.
Because when the sugar level rises too much in the bloodstream, hyperglycemia occurs.
And when there is no insulin, protein deposition stops.

The disease occurs precisely because of the problem with insulin, which the body does not use properly or does not exist in the body at all.

Symptoms that occur

diabetes symptoms illustrationFor all types of diabetes, the symptoms are almost identical. As soon as you notice any of the specific symptoms of diabetes, contact your doctor for an examination. It is important to say that in exceptional cases, the symptoms of diabetes are absent, and it is most often discovered by random controls or when we go to the doctor on some other occasion. The symptoms of diabetes are as follows:

  • Frequent urination, mostly at night
  • Excessive thirst
  • Increased appetite
  • First gaining weight and then sudden weight loss even though the person is eating enough
  • Sudden changes in vision and a feeling of tiredness most of the day
  • Dry skin and itching
  • Wounds that are difficult to heal
  • Frequent infections that pass slowly
  • Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain may also occur

In order to successfully control diabetes, it is necessary to know the disease, to be adequately educated when it comes to this disease, to know the needs of your body, and to recognize certain conditions. Because diabetes is an atypical condition that must be constantly monitored.

Main causes

Insulin deficiency or resistance to this hormone is the main cause of diseases such as diabetes.

  • Obese people often have a problem with high blood sugar levels, as do those who struggle with high blood pressure and LDL (bad cholesterol).
  • Stressful situations are also the cause of diabetes.
  • Diabetes can also be inherited, so if someone in your family is diabetic, you are also at risk.
  • There are also drugs whose consumption can lead to a predisposition for diabetes, and those are most often statins, beta-blockers, or glucocorticoids.

What types exist?

diabetes complications illustration

Diabetes Type 1

In this situation, the body is not able to produce insulin on its own, so it must be taken in a special way, most often injections.

Only 10% of diabetics have type 1 diabetes, and it is most often found in young children. They develop very quickly, usually within a few days or weeks.

Diabetes Type 2

Insulin is produced normally by the pancreas, but for some reason, other cells in the body do not absorb it.

This type is the most common type of diabetes. It develops gradually – over months or even years.

Diabetes Type 3

This type is also called gestational diabetes. It occurs in pregnant women, without any diagnosis before conception, usually in the third month.

It can be successfully cured with the help of a proper diet and by losing extra pounds.
